Blue Zones are are known for increased longevity. People living in the “blue zones” live longer healthier lives. These regions have the highest concentration of centenarians (people living >100 years old) with sustained quality of life. Reseach indicates that people living in the blue zones have these lifestyle traits in common:

  • Move more during your day

  • Eat a plant-based diet

  • Eat until you're about 80% full

  • Have strong social connections. Connect with your community.

  • Stress relief

  • Have a sense of purpose

  • Drink alcohol in moderation (if at all)

(See recipes on this site for ideas for diet changes. See other posts on this site to learn about incorporating movement and mindfulness into your day to work toward these Blue Zone lifestyle goals.)

Stress relief

Stress induces the fight or flight response, which causes the adrenal glands to secrete cortisol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline- stress response hormones. Almost every cell in your body has receptors for these hormones. This is why stress can cause such a wide range of symptoms.

Regularly spending some time intentionally “tuning out” is good for both your physical and mental well-being.

  • Exercise/ Yoga

  • Meditation/ Mindfulness

  • Taking time to enjoy your hobbies

  • Spending quality time with family and friends

  • Spending time in nature

  • Listening to music

  • Learning about something new that interests you

Purpose/Spirituality

  • What are your most important relationships?

  • What do you value most in life?

  • What people give you a sense of community?

  • What inspires you? Brings you joy? Gives you hope?

  • What are your proudest achievements?

The answers to these questions can help you identify the most important people and experiences in your life. Work to strengthen those relationships and seek out those types of experiences.

  • Prayer, meditation, and relaxation techniques can help focus your thoughts.

  • Journaling can help you organize and express these thoughts and feelings.

  • Talking these things out with a trusted friend can help you put them into action.
