The Research
The Harvard Study of Adult Development - started in 1938 - is the longest study of human happiness ever conducted
This study found that wealth doesn’t make you happier
Once your basic needs are met, making more money doesn’t make you happier, achieving more at work also doesn’t make you happier
This study found that having strong fulfilling relationships makes you happier and healthier
Science shows that these things make us happier:
Prosocial behavior - Compassion, Gratitude, Kindness
Making Time for Human Connection
Counting your Blessings/ Gratitude
Savoring Experiences
Our minds often lead us away from happiness. We often make choices, such as spending more time at work or completing to-do list tasks, which cause us to sacrifice the things that would actually make us happier - see list above.
With neuroplasticity, we can change our habits. We can retrain our thoughts to increase our happiness.
Instead of focusing on making more money to acquire more material possessions, or obtaining the perfect body so we can find true love (remember- these things won’t actually make us happy), we can learn to prioritize social connection, kindness, gratitude, and mindfulness - which will actually increase our happiness.
